Day 1 Johannesburg – Dullstroom – Graskop

Your tour guide will welcome you at Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg in the morning. During our transfer we pass Dullstroom, known for its trout breeding at the beginning of the Drakensberg Mountains. Driving over Long Tom Pass in the eastern Drakensberg Mountains to Sabie until we arrive in Graskop where we stay for three nights in a charming 3* hotel.

Day 2 Bike tour Pilgrim‘s Rest – Bourke‘s Luck Potholes – Blyde River Canyon

After visiting the historical African gold mining town of Pilgrims Rest, we ride to Bourke‘s Luck Potholes, an imposing system of potholes, through which the Blyde River makes its way to the Blyde River Canyon. A further cycle leads us over a panorama route to a view point where we enjoy the most famous and phenomenal view of the Blyde River Canyon, the 3 Rondavels view point and a great downhill into the valley below. A bus takes us to our hotel. (34 mi., hg +850 ft., tar/gravel road) (B)

Day 3 Bike tour God‘s Window – Lisbon Waterfall – MacMac Waterfall

Cycling a loop along the Drakensberg escarpment, we will see the Pinnacle, an imposing rock column as well as God‘s Window, a view point with an amazing view over the Lowveld, 3000 ft. below. After a short ride we reach the Lisbon Waterfalls and heading then back to Graskop for lunch. In the afternoon we cycle through rain forest and Meadows to the awesome MacMac waterfall. Day 4 Bike tour MacMac Plateau – Hazyview

The gravel road takes us along the great escarpment down into the subtropical climate of the Lowveld. By bus we reach the world famous Kruger National Park. We may see lion, elephant, zebra, hippo, rhino, giraffe, buffalo, antelope, wild dogs and also a colourful array of birds and a large variety of vegetation on the safari. We will stay in 2-3* chalets in a camp in the south of the park. (28 mi., hg +1400 ft., tar/forest road) (B)

Day 5 Safari trip in Kruger National Park

Most game are active in the cool temperatures of the morning, one can join a walk with a ranger (optional, should be booked well in advance, only 8 places are available). After breakfast we drive along some riparian forests and granite mountains to another camp in the park where we stay in thatched 2-3* cottages. In the afternoon, we head out on another game drive, this time in an open game viewing vehicle. (B)

Day 6 Bike tour in Swaziland – Forbes Reef – Malolotja Nature Reserve

Before leaving Kruger Nationalpark for Swaziland, we will go on a further safari in the morning. The small African kingdom of Swaziland domiciled the welcoming Swazi people. NEW! During a visit to the District Hospital in Piggs Peak we hand over a bicycle from the World Bicycle Relieve Fund which is purchased by African Bikers Tours to a mentor mother of the mothers2mothers charity organization who fulfils a crucial role in the fight against HIV/AIDS. We cycle through the green highlands from Forbes Reef to Mbabane. Our further bike tour takes us to Ezulwini Valley to the interesting Mlilwane Game Sanctuary. Here you can do game watching on foot and by bicycle in complete safety as besides buffalo and elephant there are no predators. We stay two nights in beehive houses and learn more about dance, beliefs and habits of the locals during traditional dinner. You fall asleep to the sounds of Africa. (11 mi., hg +230 ft., tar) (B)

Day 7 Bike Tour Mantenga – Mlilwane – Manzini

Transfer in the uSutu Forest after breakfast. We cycle along quiet country roads and past many kraals before we get to a work shop where the Swazi make the famous candles to the accompaniment of local music. We continue our ride to the Mlilwane Animal Protection Park. From our bikes we can see zebra, blesbok, impala, ostrich, warthog and at a dam, hippo. On our drive back to the accommodation we pass a kings palace. (42 mi., hg 1300 ft., tar/gravel road) (B)

Day 8 Bike tour Mlilwane – Siphofaneni

After a short Transfer to Manzini we ride into the Tropical landscape of the low land were various acacia species and Aloe plants are prolific. On a quite gravel road we pass many Kraals and Kids will cheer us on. From Siphofaneni we shuttle to the entrance of Mkhaya Game Reserve. There is still plenty of black and White rhino to be spotted from the open land rovers. We stay in the comfortable Chalets in the Busch camp and enjoy a great dinner. (39 mi., 1500 ft., gravel/tar) (B,D)

Day 9 Safari in Hluhluwe Game Reserve

On our ride into idyllic Zulu country in South Africa we drive past villages and fields of sugarcane. We will go on a safari in our vehicle in the Umfolozi/Hluhluwe National Park, which is known worldwide for their white and black rhino species protection program. In addition to the Big 5 – lions, elephants, rhino, leopard and buffalo, we may also see the beautiful lowland nyala antelope. We will stay in a 4* guesthouse in St. Lucia for the next two nights. The town is situated in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. (B)

Day 10 St. Lucia – Boat ride and rest day

In the morning you may enjoy a boat trip on the St. Lucia Lagoon (optional). One can see crocodiles and hippo and also African fish eagle, goliath heron and many other bird species. The rest of the day is for free time. Maybe you swim in the warm Indian Ocean, walk through the rainforest, or join us by exploring a small township on the bike to the explanations of an enthusiastic local guide. Day 11 Cape Vidal hike and swim

A day excursion takes us into the world heritage site. The Goal is to reach Cape Vidal in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. On the way we might spot elephant, buffalo, duikers, kudu and other antelope as well as many bird species. The beach is protected by a reef and permits safe swimming and a stroll. (B)

Day 12 Bike tour in the Valley of a Thousand Hills

We continue our trip towards the lively harbour city of Durban with its many beautiful beaches. Via Wartburg, one of the old German settlements, we ride through the Valley of a Thousand Hills and past many Zulu kraals. After a short transfer we arrive at our beach hotel on the promenade 3* where we stay for 2 nights. (27 mi, hg + 600 ft, tar) (B)

Day 13 Aid project – Indian Market and sharks

We visit the Mariannhill Mission station, where the English speaking sisters don‘t only run the guesthouse, but is also one of the best schools in Durban, a hospital, a sewing center and a bakery. One of the sisters will present the project to us. While visiting the town we walk to the oriental Indian spice market. In the afternoon we recommend a visit to the uShaka Marine World Aquarium (optional) with its Highlights: the sharks and rays. Another alternative is to go swimming or surfing at the beaches, which are protected from currents and sharks. (B)

Day 14 Bike tour Bergville – Amphitheatre

Our bike tour takes us from the coast towards Natal Midlands until we reach Bergville. We cycle over green farm land and later past many Zulu kraals. We manage the many potholes while the children are happy watching us. On our left the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ukhahlambra Drakensberg Mountains looms up and draws our attention. Many of the peaks are over 9000 ft high and between April and October can be covered in snow. We stay in a lodge 3* for two nights. (29 mi., hg +1450 ft., tar) (B)

Day 15 Hiking tour in the Royal Natal National Park

We drive next to the Tugela River into the Royal Natal National Park. We make our way on a slightly undulating path into the Tugela Gorge, whilst the Tugela Waterfalls, 3900 ft deep) cascade from the amphitheater. During the 4-5 hour hike we will have a look at the tree ferns, protea and orchids. A Transfer takes us back to the lodge. (B)

Day 16 Drive back to Johannesburg – Apartheid Museum – Airport

After breakfast we had back to Johannesburg. The Apartheid Museum gives us an insight of the turbulent past. A transfer to Oliver Tambo International Airport will be the end of this remarkable and versatile journey. (B)
