Road cycling fitness holidays
On the Rivet is about unbridled indulgence in your passion for cycling. It’s about allowing yourself time to escape the chaos, and head for the green hills and spectacular coastline of Dorset for a week of pure road-biking freedom. With us you’ll push new limits and share your achievements with kindred spirits, all under the expert guidance of British Cycling coach and personal trainer, Jim Styrin.
More relaxed than a cycling training camp
Our formula is simple: we head out each day on epic rides through west Dorset’s iconic countryside and some of Europe’s most exhilarating cycling routes. You’ll also enjoy yourself more than you thought possible as you break through personal boundaries and fill your lungs with pristine sea air. There’s no boot-camp style beasting, only the spectacular Dorset scenery, Jim’s in-depth knowledge and guidance, plus the full back-up of our support team, who bring us delicious lunches, incredible rustic coffee and cake and mechanical expertise whenever we need them.
When the hard work is done
Back at On the Rivet’s cool country house, weary but buzzing with the day’s accomplishments behind us, we lavish you with wholesome, home-cooked food and easy going evenings spent in the company of new friends.
You will also nourish your cycle soul, with restorative spa treatments and downtime spent in On the Rivet’s private swimming pool, sauna and steam room.
Cycling in Dorset
On the Rivet takes you through some of Dorset’s most iconic landscapes, from the ascent of Abbotsbury Hill to the sweep of the Jurassic Coast as it curves around Lyme Bay. With challenging climbs and spectacular scenery, these routes rival some of the most popular alpine experiences. Rides are co-ordinated and led by Jim, along with our team of guides and support staff, offering inspiration, motivation and expert advice. There’s always time for fun, relaxation and recovery too, with gourmet packed lunches (with cycling nutrition in mind) and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the space, fresh air and unforgettable Dorset coastline.
What level of road cyclist does On the Rivet cater for?
All On the Rivet retreats are designed for experienced road cyclists. We focus our rides on the blue and red categories highlighted below. However we throw in a bit of green to ease you in and should you choose, a bit of black. We provide guidance and support at the appropriate level at all times and will never force a rider out of his or her comfort zone. If you consider yourself able to handle a degree of red then On the Rivet is designed for you.
Level 1 – Green – A steady base ride to spin the legs and ease you in.
An introduction to the area and each other.
Gentle hills and steady pace.
No demanding climbs.
Level 2 – Blue – A comfortable but increased pace on varied terrain for up to 3 – 4 hours with one or two challenging climbs.
A good degree of fitness will be required.
Level 3 – Red – A brisk pace on varied terrain for up to 3 – 4 hours.
Riders will need a good degree of fitness and endurance and be prepared to ride reasonably hard on the flats and be able to handle one or two challenging climbs.
Level 4 – Black – Riders with considerable fitness and endurance that wish to truly challenge themselves both mentally and physically can do so with full support and guidance.
It must be stressed that this level of riding is optional.
Jim is your coach, guide and mentor throughout your On the Rivet experience. He’s been a competitive cyclist since childhood, and as well as being a qualified British Cycling coach, he’s the 2014 Cross Country MTB Southern Open champion. But Jim is more than just a cyclist.
He’s an advanced personal trainer, gym instructor and spinning coach. His wide and varied experience, along with his passion for cycling, makes Jim an inspirational leader during your On the Rivet retreat. Jim will be on hand from the moment you hit go, helping you target your personal goals and making sure you hit them.
A word from Jim
“Cycling gives me such a deep sense of freedom. For me, it’s about the adventure and exhilaration of getting out there and pushing myself physically.
My idea of heaven would be to return home from a great ride, enjoy a massage, a swim, maybe a sauna, tuck into some wholesome food and share good times with friends. Follow that with a great night’s sleep and the chance to do it all again the next day – well that would be perfect. It’s why I created On the Rivet.
Dorset is such a beautiful place; not only is the landscape spectacular but it’s rich in culture and home to so many talented and interesting people (some of whom we meet during the course of our retreats). I hope you’ll join my team and I here at On the Rivet and allow us to share with you this wonderful place.”
